Dear Old Boys of Wah Yan and overseas Chapter Chairmen,

I write to invite you to co-ordinate with your classmates of the same chapter/class to individually or jointly contribute to the Wah Yan One Family Foundation (WYOFF) in order to realise my dream in improving the quality of education at Wah Yan. Details of my dream for Wah Yan's future and the WYOFF are at www.wahyanonefamily.org .

In short, I would like to further improve the quality of education at the two Wah Yan Colleges and make them centres of excellence by developing not only the knowledge of their students but also their character and values. To do so, I hope to reduce existing class size, recruit more good teachers to provide a better all-round curriculum and offer better training to teachers to develop their professional skills, etc. Since Government subsidy for such purposes is not only limited but difficult to get, extra financial resources are needed to implement these improvements.

I just spent yesterday (July 1st) with the two Wah Yan Ambassadors who are visiting San Francisco, and seven other Wah Yan alumni at Berkeley and De Anza Community College. They told me:

1) It is rarely the case you will find teachers' cars in the parking lot
after 5 p.m. on most school days in both Wah Yan's. Many teachers
immediately leave right after school is over. Unlike in our time when
teachers stayed behind to advise, coach student activities (scout, art,
film, Math Olympiad, calligraphy, staging operas, class and school plays),
mentoring remedial students, these rarely take place. There is also no
more teachers who would volunteer to teach after retirement, as did Chiu
Hei-kaw, Wong Chin-wah, Yu Pun-leung, Francis Kong. One student remarked that when Francis Kong was buried last Christmas, an entire chapter of Wah Yan good teaching for the past 80 years came to an end.

To my fellow alumni of the Class of ’71: Following is an article that I had written as a tribute to Mr. Francis Kong, and was to be included along with others in a book commemorating him. Through my own procrastination, it was too late to be included by the time I finished. I would like to share it with you now, hoping to stimulate some ruminations on your part about the man.

這齣「青春兒女」是1956年電懋公司的國語片，由葛蘭、林翠主演，現在已有全新修復版的DVD和VCD 出售。 

大家請注意，全齣電影是在九龍華仁的校舍拍攝的！ 

這年頭， 與同業談起公司年輕同事的英文水平， 總是引來慨嘆。 一般大學會計系畢業生， 尤其是男生， 英文之講寫， 很多時都不忍耳聽目睹。 真不知道他們中小學階段如何學習英文。 見到亞松談起 Mr Aras， 我也加入談談記憶所及當年 Form One 時學英語之片段。

六十年代升中學， 我們都要考升中試 中英數三科，但毋須考英語口試。 故一般中文小學上英語課， 都不注重發音。 我初到華仁， 編入 1 A班 ，班主任為Mr Aras，他負責教 English Reading。 我相信他也清楚知道這班多由中文小學轉來學生的缺點，所以特別注重糾正我們之英語發音。 如”R” 與” L”， “L” 與 “ N” 之分別， “ th”及 “long e & a”的正確讀法。 他要我們每人帶一面小 鏡子上堂， 觀察自己發聲時的口形及舌頭位置是否正確。 遇到難教如我者，則要站再他面前，由他 親自示範。 偶然他也發牢騷 ， 說 “ I don’t know why the Government sent you here。” 同班盧沛成仍紀得Mr Aras 要他正確讀 “O” 發音時， 把一支粉筆放進他口中， 確保口擘得夠大夠圓。
